The first step of this project implements the Preliminary Phase to discover the potential of AI for railways. It aims to identify current potentials of AI in the railway sector to provide an exhaustive evaluation of applications into different railway subsystems. State-of-the-art approaches in railways and other high-tech sectors in the field of asset maintenance, automation, traffic planning and management will be determined as well as their current limitations. Also, state-of-the-art AI techniques in relevant Shift2Rail projects will be investigated. Such an evaluation will lead to the definition of a taxonomy and determining promising AI for effective migration towards applying AI in railways. This project will look across all Shift2Rail IPs to identify promising AI applications.
